Details about Gabarone
Gaborone is the capital of Botswana and its estimated population
is 186,000 (2001).
The new city, Gaborone, has a relatively good water supply, which
has facilitated growth. Originally it was planned to be quite a small
town, but it has grown rapidly.
The Southern African Development Community (SADC) makes its headquarters
in Gaborone; the organization was formed in 1980 to increase economic
cooperation among its members and reduce dependence on South Africa.
Nearby manganese and asbestos mines have led to industrial expansion.
People of Gaborone tend be less friendly (or claimed so) as compared
to Batswana (people of Botswana) across the country. Today Gaborone
is a vibrant cosmopolitan capital, although small in size, is a melting
pot of diverse cultures and practices.
The "Mosadi Mogolo", litterally translated to mean "Old
Lady" of a low cost housing location in Gaborone, is regarded
by many as the protector and patroness of the City. In reality she
is an obscure mystical personality, and only very few claim to have
seen her in person.
Gaborone is the seat of the University of Botswana.
The main campus is located in central Gaborone, and hosts students
primarily from different parts of Botswana, as well as a large expatriate
student body. The University of Botswana, the nation's largest tertiary
education facility, is a rapidly growing institution. The university's
new library (added in 2001) is the largest public library in Southern
Africa.
Places to visit in Gabarone are National Museum and Art Gallery, The
Main Mall, Gaborone Game Reserve and Oodi Weavers. Recomended restaurants
to go out for dinner are Kgotla, Alfredo, The shebeen and the Brazilian
Cafe - located at the Kagiso Centre. Bars and clubs to hang out in
Gabarone are Bull and Bush Pub, Platform and Legends. Activities recreational
spots for children are St Claire Lion Park and Mokolodi Nature Reserve.
