Belize City
Belize City is located at the east coast of Belize. It used to be
the countries capital until 1970, when the government moved the capital
to Belmopan. Loosing its status as the nations capital did not diminish
its charm. Belize City is a lively captivating place with a population
of about 70,000 people. It is the current largest city in Central
America.
Belize City is the doorway to many historical and cultural points
within the country, making it a great starting point for your holidays
in Belize. A must see attraction within Belize itself would be St.
Jones Cathedral, the oldest Anglican Cathedral in whole Central America.
The government House, dating back to 1812, is located right in front
of the Cathedral. Being a port city Belize City also has a historic
lighthouse that has been converted into a museum. It was donated by
the Baron Bliss, the fifth Baron of Portugal. Tours are available
on site. Amongst other attractions are the Maritime and Coastal Museum,
the Image Factory, featuring works of art by Belize’s contemporary
artist and the Bliss Institute, the cultural centre of the city.
Getting around in Belize City is very easy. The city is neatly divided
into north and south by the Haulover creek. The Swing Bridge is the
pivotal point of the city centre. On the northern side of the bridge
you will find the more expensive part of town. Here is where most
of the hotels are located. The southern part is the commercial and
market part of town. Being a rather small city walking would be the
best option for getting around Belize City.
