Guatemala City
Guatemala City, the capital of Guatemala, was first populated by the
Mayas 2000 years ago. One can still admire ruins of that time in a
Park at the heart of the city centre. “Guate” as the city
is lovingly referred to by locals is populated by about 2,5 Million
people, making it not only the largest city in Guatemala but of whole
Central America. The name Guatemala comes from the ancient Nahuatl
language and it means “Land of Trees”, describing the
forests that once used to dominate the landscape.
Although only a few Mayan ruins are left to marvel at the city has
various excellent museums to choose from, allowing the tourist a glance
into the City’s history. The City also has many restaurants
where good food is served and the night life is very lively. On Sunday
evenings hundreds of locals gather together at the main Plaza to simply
catch up on the latest new and make new acquaintances.
Guatemala City is divided between Old City and New City, as well as
into 21 different Zones. This might seem intimidating but the main
tourist attractions are situated in the main four central zones of
the city, making it very easy for the tourist to get around in Guatemala
City. Important to note is zone 4. Here is where the bus terminal
is located at. Another note worthy information is that numbered avenues
(Avenidas) run from north to south and numbered streets (Calles) run
from east to west.
