Tegucigalpa
Tegucigalpa, the capital of Honduras, is located at the south end
of the country and is the largest city with a population close to
one million people. It is also the capital of the department of
Francisco Morazan, one of the eighteen departments of Honduras.
It is nestled in a valley surrounded completely by mountains that
are covered with pine trees, making its climate at about 3000ft
above sea level ideal. The Pacific coast is only a few hours drive
away.
Legend has it that Tegucigalpa was named after the ancient Nahuatl
word “Silver Mountain”. The Spaniards did indeed find
silver when they colonized the city, thus making it an important
mining centre. Nowadays the textile, sugar and cigarette industries
dominate the cities economic income.
“Tegus” as locals lovingly call their city is a mix
between an old colonial city and a modern capital with numerous
nightlife attractions that will keep you up till the early hours
of dawn. The Boulevard Morazan is the heart of commerce of Tegucigalpa.
On either side you will find a variety of shops, restaurants and
clubs. The old historical centre is a must see for any tourist travelling
through Tegucigalpa. The Cathedral, built between 1765 and 1782,
is located within this historical centre. Another tourist attraction
is the massive image of Christ built in 1997 on the mountaintop
of El Picacho. The park El Picacho also offers other smaller monuments
and a small zoo as its main features and not to forget the awesome
view of the city below. When at El Picacho you are but a few miles
away from the beautiful La Tigra national park.
Due to its hilly terrain Tegucigalpa is not traditionally built
as a Spanish city. This makes getting around Tegucigalpa a little
bit confusing. But not to worry, the city has a good central gateway
and transportation hub (bus terminals and an airport) which offers
easy connection all over Honduras.
