Locri One Of The Best Known And Most Studied Of The Calabrian Greek Colonies. After Some Years, However, The Colonists Moved North About 20 Km To A Vast And Fertile Plain Situated On The Side Of A Hill. Here On The Foothills Of Aspromonte, And Parallel To The Coastline, Stood The Definitive Site Of The City. A Short While After Its Foundation, Probably Halfway Through The Seventh Century Bc, The Legislator Zaleuco Gave Locri A Corpus Of Written Laws That Is Europe*s Oldest Legislative Code. Locri Enjoyed Its Greatest Splendor Up To The First Decades Of The Fifth Century, But Already From The Fourth Century Bc, Once Entered The Sphere Of Influence Of Syracuse, The City Began A Steady And Irreversible Process Of Decline. In 205 Bc It Finally Became A Roman Municipium. Locri Was Definitively Abandoned About The Seventh Or Eighth Century Ad, When Its Inhabitants Retired To Fortifications On The Higher Land Of Nearby Gerace, To Protect Themselves From Arab Incursions. From The Second Half Of The Nineteenth Century, The Latter Also Developed Along The Coast, Creating An Outlying Ward That In 1934 Took The Name Of Locri. The Modern Town, Whose Tourist Vocation Has Become More Accentuated In The Last Few Decades, Today Is One Of The Most Active Industrial And Commercial Centers Of The Province Of Reggio.
