| Area Information |
Villapiana Villapiana Is A Small Place On The Ionian Coast In The Province Of Cosenza. The Oldest Part Of The Village, That Was Originally Called Casalnuovo, Is Situated On A Hill At The Confluence Of The Torrents Saraceno And Satanasso, And Dates Back To The Fourteenth Century, Even If The Numerous Archaeological Finds From The Surrounding Area Demonstrate A Substantial Continuity Of Settlement From The Middle Bronze Age Onwards. In Its Historic Center, One Of The Most Suggestive Of The Upper Ionian Coast, The Ruins Of The Fourteenth Century Castle Can Be Admired, The Churches Of Santa Maria Del Piano And Of The Immaculate Conception, Along With Various Noblemen*s Houses. In The Villapiana District, Moreover, There Are Some Monasteries And Two Reasonably Well Preserved Coastal Towers. The Newest Residential Area, That Is Divided Into Two Separate Centers, The *lido* And The *scalo* Has Developed Along The Coast Among Thick Pine Copses. Nowadays It Is A Well Known Seaside Resort, Provided With Modern Hotel Complexes And Superbly Equipped For Sport And Entertainment. The Hotel Is Located About 30 Km From Roseto Capo Spulico. Roseto Capo Spulico Is A Charming And Well Known Seaside Resort On The Ionian Coast Of The Cosenza Region, Almost On The Border Between Calabria And Basilicata. Of Medieval Origins, Its Name Is Supposed To Be Due To The Roses Which, Thanks To The Mild Climate, Blossom Throughout The Year. The Historic Center Of The Village Used To Be Surrounded By Walls Built In The Xiii Century And Traces Still Remain. It Has An Old Castrum Built Towards The End Of The Xi Century, Now The Seat Of The Town Hall And Of The Country Life Museum. Roseto*s Real Gem, However, Is The Castle. A Short Distance Away From The Inhabited Center, The Norman Period Castle Stands Out In A Wonderful Position On A Cliff Sheer Over The Sea. During The Xiii Century Frederick Ii Restructured The Castle. Along The Coast, About A Kilometer From The Castle, Stand The Ruins Of An Ancient Watch Tower, Called The Tower Of Capo Spulico Or Torre Spaccata. The Village Too Has Many Attractions And Mention Must Be Made Of The Church Of Santa Maria Della Consolazione, The Chapel Of The Immaculate Conception And The St. Vitale Fountain. The Hotel Is Located About 35 Km From Sibari. Sibari, One Of The Biggest And Oldest Cities Of The Magna Graecia, Was Founded By The Achei Who Settled In The Territory Between The Rivers Crati And Sybaris • Now Coscile- Around 730-720 Bc Rich And Powerful, With A Population Of 100,000 Inhabitants. Sibari Was Known In The Ancient World For Its Opulence, Luxury And Elegance Of Its Customs. The City, In Conflict With Both The Other Greek Colonies And The Lucan And Bretii Colonies, Finally Ended Up Under The Romans And In 194 Bc Became The Seat Of A Latin Colony. The Archaeological Sites Where Excavation Is Still Carried Out, Have Brought To Light Significant Evidence Of The Various Stages Of The Life Of The City. The Most Important Excavation Areas Are In Stombi, Or Parco Dei Tori, Parco Dell Cavallo And Casa Bianca. Many Of The Findings Are Kept In The National Sybaritide Archaeological Museum. Sibari, A Fraction Of Cassano Allo Ionio, Is Now A Holiday Resort In The Province Of Cosenza. Its Tourist Port, Called Of The Laghi, Is Very Well Known And Has Room For 900 Boats. The Hotel Is Located About 44 Km From Rossano. Rossano Extending 270 Meters Above Sea Level Along The Northern Slope Of Greek Sila Dominates The Ionian Coast Of The Cosenza Region On Which The New Part Of The Village Has Developed. Evidence Dating Back To The Iron Age And To The Period Of The Bretii, Found In The Nearby Paludi, Suggest That The Site Of The Town Was Already Inhabited In Prehistoric Times. Rossano, However, Is Known As The *byzantine Pearl Of Calabria*. From The Vi To The Xi Century, In Fact, It Was One Of The Most Strategically, Militarily And Politically Important Centers Of The Byzantine
