The Royal Oak's relaxed atmosphere and friendly, hassle-free service combine with newly-refurbished bedrooms and a pretty location at the edge of an historic Dorset village to give you a perfect place to stay in the midst of timeless Hardy country. All of the beautifully appointed rooms are named after towns from Thomas Hardy novels and are en-suite. Each is furnished with a color television, tea and coffee making facilities and a hair dryer. Trouser presses and irons are also available. The parish of Bere Regis has had a long history of human occupation. The actual village became a settlement proper during Saxon times. Woodbury Hill was the site of one of the largest markets in Southern England. This, together with the regular visits of King John in the late twelfth and early thirteenth centuries, led to the settlement gaining town status. Bere Regis is famed in particular for its church. Its association with Thomas Hardy's Tess of the D'Ubervilles attracts many visitors.
